Mathematicallly 1 + 1 = 2
In real life however every 1 thing is made of millions of components. Hence the term we know as 1 is unreal. Because 1 is a lot of 1s and each one of those 1s has millions of 1s that compose it.
Hence 1 thing with X billion components added to 1 thing with Y billion components would be 1 thing with (X + Y) components. But is now a 1 new thing. 2 is a 1 thing with greater value than a base 1 thing.
No, I'm not on drugs.

"1" is a symbolic notation chosen to represent the whole of any individual given thing. It, like all words and symbols, are arbitrary, though -- human contrivances that we may choose to ascribe to or not. You could assign whatever symbol(s) you would like to computation, but the second formula (1+1=1) seems to negate any and all positive value from your symbols, so I'm going with a "no" on this. Let's pretend that in your universe, 1 means "dog". Dog plus dog equals dog. No. Dog plus dog equals dogs. The only way I can see this is if 1 means zero to you. Zero plus zero equals zero. Void plus void equals void. Nothing plus nothing equals nothing. Yes, I can see it then. It will be a confusing struggle for you in the rest of the world, though, if you take that route. :P

if you add 1 of the same thing with one of the same thing, you will get an increasing value
if you add one of the same thing plus one of a different thing, you will get 1 different thing, or one same thing
it comes down to identity, but in math
1+1 will always equal 2

everyone has been saying it but the simplest example is a puzzle. 1 puzzle piece plus another makes a new puzzle piece and all them together makes 1 puzzle.

Mathematically impossible
Socially possible , that is when your partner is (with all my due respect) nothing or Zero (i.e):
1+0=1
I hope that you convinced.Best regards
