Keep in mind the following definitions:
M = 1000
D = 500
C = 100
L = 50
X = 10
V = 5
I = 1
When you go from big to small (reading left to right), you add the numbers together. For example, LXXV = 50 + 10 + 10 + 5 = 75
When you go from small to big, you subtract the small from the big. For example, IV = 5 - 1 = 4
So, you look for any instances of a smaller number preceding a larger number. Your example has two of them: CM and XL. They are 900 and 40, respectively.
Added up, you have M + (CM) + (XL) + V + I + I which can be written as:
1000 + (1000 - 100) + (50 - 10) + 5 + 1 + 1
= 1000 + 900 + 40 + 7
= 1947

Why doesn't the NBA number their Championships? I mean MLB it is fine to use the year because they are the ONLY sport to start and end in the same year. As to the NHL you usually just hear it is the Stanley Cup champion, the year is left off. The NFL had enough sense to NUMBER THE CHAMPIONSHIP when they started the Superbowl. That was because the season starts one year and ends the next. Then the game is so big they can get away with using Roman Numerals. BTW there is no XXL(that would be XXX because XXL would technically be 50-20).
