for the past five weeks i have had a period every week, these are very painful and result in terrible mood swings. I am only 20 years old but my periods are usually very regular.

You will need to go to the doctor because there must be a medical explanation as to why your bleeding so much as you could not be having a period each week because you only ovulate once a month. Are you taking the pill? Maybe if you are this is the reason & you will need to switch brand if it doesnt agree with you.

As I come across patients in my practice, the problem tends to be birth-control pills. Many of these pills can cause problems in the menstrual cycle causing no period (which is what is wanted) or frequent period from the the body's natural reaction to the drugs. My suggestion is talk to your doctor and see if the problem lies there.

Frequent periods is called polymenorrhea. One prominent cause is stress, the other a hormonal imbalance. You should go to see a doctor and your hormones level would be checked. Otherwise you can only have analgesics to ease the pain and drink fluids to substitute the blood you lose.

You might have fibroids or a hormone imbalance. I would make an apt. with your doc. ASAP, it's difficult to diagnose your symptoms without having some test done. You shouldn't be having a period for 5 weeks & you might be becoming anemic from all your blood loss.

You didn't ask a question but I'd advise you to see your doctor. Frequent bleeding can be due to a medical issue and can also cause you health problems. Get it checked out asap.

I would say go to the doctors, if you are on the pill you may need to change the type you take.
