Step 1) Go to your local computer store (you choose the mode of transport).
Step 2) Ask one of the employees for a cross-over ethernet cable.
Step 3) Explain to employee that a cross over cable is used to connect 2 computers without needing a hub or switch. (They are often times red)
Step 4) Pay for cable (again, you can choose the method of payment)
Step 5) Return home (Normally the same way you went to the store)
Step 6) Connect one end of the cable to the each of the 2 computers
Step 7) Turn computers on
Step 8) Configure each computer to have a static IP address of 192.168.1.10 and 192.168.1.11 respectively. Both should have a netmask of 255.255.255.0. (I don't use Windows so you will have to figure that out on your own
Step 9) Share folders. Otherwise there is no need to network the 2 computers.

You will need to use a crossover cable, these can be purchased from shops but is you have some RJ-45s (the plastic connector at the end of the cable) and a crimping tool (used to secure the RJ-45 to the cable),
you can cut one end of the cable off and 'map' it (the sequence of colours) so that it is the same as the other end BUT the White orange cable is swapped with the White Green cable and the orange cable is swapped with the Green cable...
so the cable 'map' should be
end1
WhiteOrange, Orange, WhiteGreen, Blue, WhiteBlue, Green, WhiteBrown, Brown,
end2
WhiteGreen, Green, WhiteOrange, Blue, WhiteBlue, Orange, WhiteBrown, Brown,
It is also a good idea to assign 'static' IP (Internet Protocol) addresses to each of the computers
Start>settings>network connections
right click your network connection>properties
scroll down and select Internet Protocol (tcp/ip)>properties
select 'use the following address'
enter 192.168.1.1 in the ip address section
and add 255.255.255.0 in the subnet mask section
this is the same setup for both computers BUT when you enter the IP address (the 192.168.1.1) in the second computer use the address 192.168.1.2
to test the connection...
Start>run
type cmd >enter
type ping 192.168.1.1 (the address of the other computer) and press enter if there is no reply there are problems with your network cable, network cards or both

If the PC's are connected directly to each other and not by a switch you have to use a crossover cable.

I don't think you can use a straight ethernet cable to connect pc to pc. I think it has to be a crossover cable.
