as a youth offending officer i know that it is important to set a good example to all youngsters which means doing everything the right way and not taking shortcuts. this is very hard work, but you will get the rewards of seeing your child grow up doing things the way you do. remember, with children it is monkey see, monkey do.
the reason some children misbehave is because the parents have not taken the time to teach their children the right way to do things. if your child does things right, then to reward them with days out or gifts reminds them that they get rewarded for their efforts, plus the family bonding gives them happy memories. so later in life they become nice people because they dont have many bad memories to affect their personality.

Children learn from the people around them. If their parents swear around them when they are young, they will copy them because that is the model that they have seen.
There are many theorists that discuss the stages that children go through in their development as children, but it depends on what angle you are looking for. I'm a trainee teacher so I only know from that perspective. If your interested about this, look at Jean Piaget and Vygotsky, they'll lead you on the right path!

It has a lot to do with what they're exposed to during their most formative years. These things are more deeply engrained in the mind that things learned at a later age, say 18 to 25.
