I know this is only my opinion but I HATE when people do that!!! Why in the name of common sense would you teach a child to talk as you say baby talk and then sometime down the road you have to teach him or her how to speak correctly. Why not teach them the proper way to talk in the first place instead of confusing the poor kid???? GGRRRR I have 2 kids and we decided to try in a gentle but firm way not to permit people to talk baby talk to them! I decided they are my kids and I don't want them to be confused with having to relearn English. Is it bad for development? In my opinion it is!!

Well I think the answer is covered pretty well. It wont hurt the baby and eventually it will stop.
I guess I am really posting because I am wondering if you know that it doesnt make a difference what is said here the grandparents are going to do whatever they want anyway...its a grandparent right or something.
Just wait soon (and yes I mean very soon) will come the bags of candy and annoying Christmas and birthday gifts. Spoiling them rotten is thought to be a grandparents duty and no matter what you say or do there is no stopping them. But hey thats what grandparents are for.

I don't suggest it.
With my nephew the other grandparents would talk baby talk and even still do to him and he's almost 3...and so when he's around me after being around them for longer I have to get him back talking normal and it's confusing for him. He's trying to be a big kid and then people are talking baby.
I don't suggest ever talking baby to kids, just because they only weight 10lbs doesn't mean they're dumb. They understand us.
Children are going to talk the way they hear, so if the child is always being talked to as a baby, most likely they'll end up in speech therapy which isn't going to be cheap!

Technically, any conversation with your infant helps language development. Even if it's baby talk, it helps baby learn the rhythm of dialogue, the different patterns of speech, and rudimentary language. It's probably better in the long run to use "real" words, but if you and your partner don't exclusively use baby talk as well, it's not going to harm the baby. Plus, it's really hard to get grandparents to change their ways :D

Talking to a baby in its "language" is not bad for development at all. However, talking that way at all times and not using real words can be. A baby learns by the shapes and sounds your mouth makes. However, talking baby is helpful to calm a baby or keep him/her occupied. Use a mixture of things and enjoy the baby now. They grow up very fast.

Let the grandparents have their fun. It is important that Mom and Dad speak to the child as you what her to learn. My oldest son was our only child for 4 years. I talked to him like he was an adult and the result was at 2 he was a great conversationalist. People would were always amazed at how well he spoke. My parents would always speak to him in baby talk and it did not effect him. The same is true of our middle child. My third child is only 8 months so we will have to wait.

I don't think so at her age as long as the two of you talk normal. It's when they begin speaking and grandma's are saying tucky wucky and twuck, and dolly wollie and things of that nature that I think it IS harming their speech.
Every child is different and will learn at their own pace. (And learn the differences between right and wrong) at some point. Just be the best loving and caring parent that you can be and hope for the best, because guess what you have...a little individual with a very unique personality all their own. Good Luck and Congrats on the new arrival! ~joni

No, it's not bad. Just about everyone does this to a baby. But when he/she gets to about 2 or 3, then it's time to back off and talk normally. This will set an example for the child.

If that's all the baby heard day in and day out...maybe. But I assume baby talk is not the norm that the baby hears, so just relax and let the grandparents have fun. It's more important that the baby feel love than clearly enunciated words.

It is funny how people talk to babies isn't it?! Not sure why people think they must talk in a different tone like they will be understood better or something. No it won't be bad for development just a good laugh I guess.
