All kinds of things affect the magnetic field of the earth.

running water, metal, etc.

Your subconscious mind is aware of all kinds of things of a subtle nature that you are not consciously aware of.

Your subconscious mind picks up on the subtle changes, and influences muscle movements that causes the metal rods, or tree limb to react to this subtle change.

It "works" by the ideomotor effect. (Google it and you'll find good information.)

In short, imperceptible muscular actions cause, in this case, the two metal hangers to cross... It's also why Ouija boards "work". In the example, you give, you all ready know there's water around the sink so you unconsciously cause the hangers to cross.

If it actually did work at finding water, why doesn't it work when you're around the water pipes in the walls of your house??

In the field, looking for a place to find where to dig a well, the chances of finding water if one digs a well deep enough are very, very high.

There is some scientific evidence that the evaporation of water or the magnetic field difference in the water as opposed to the soil affects the rods or hangers.

Scientifically, it hasn't been proven.

In underground water there live little gnomes that wear very strong magnetic hats to keep their heads from popping off. When you dowse with the metal rods it picks up their hats. But be warned. If you drill a well there they get mad and pee iron into your water so you have to buy water softener equipment.

It doesn't. Controlled experiments show that water witchers are no more successful at finding water than random guessing.

I've never heard a scientific reason but I've seen it happen. I've seen people accurately find field tile this way - it is amazing.
