I found this really great navy uniform (black sailor style, shirt, button front pants, and hat) it looks like it would have been from the 40's. But I am not sure how could I find out?

There are minor differences between the uniform of WWII and the uniform that I wore in 1964-1968. WWII blues have a white cording sewn into one of the sleeves. Flat hats, the dress hats of WWII, were worn up to 1963. The Dixie Cup has been used for a long time. Each part of the uniform is there for a reason, but since it has been a long time, I can't tell you much of it. The scarf, however, was representative of a cloth that the sailors of the Revolutionary era, and is probably a carry over from England, was worn to protect the hair from the tar that they used to paint the sides of the ship with to seal them against water. There is a story behind teh flap and another about the white piping that goes around the flap and is on the sleeves of the uniform. The 13 buttons are there to give a girl 13 chances to say "NO!", but they had better say NO 13 times really quickly.

They are not bell bottomed unless they have been tailored. They are straight legged. Stovepipe, if you wish. This is so that if a man fell overboard, he could slip off the wet wool and let his pants drop to lighten him in the water.

They are not black, they are Navy Blue melton wool. If there is a patch on one sleeve, you can see what unit he was in, or what ship he was on, and check that against when that ship was in commission and that will give you a bit of a time frame.

Lift the back flap of the jumper there should be a tag that will tell you the size who made it and how to order more if you see a stock number that looks like this 1234-00-567-8901 then you have a jumper from the 1960-today if it is not 100% wool you have a jumper from 1984 to today. You can tell if it is wool by the weight it will feel heavy.

Does it have the scarf and Dixie cup hat? if complete and the right age you have a collectors item. Check all sources offered by the others and then find an apparel appraiser that you trust and see what they say. Try more than one appraiser so that you get a range of prices also you will get an idea if one is trying to cheat you . Good luck.

The Navy blues that I wore between 69 and 73 were similar. In the link that I found, it says that there has been some change recently, but it does not appear that it affects the dress blues. The second link is to a rental agency. The third link is to a site which features world war 1 uniform pictures. According to that site, the dress enlisted uniform hasn't changed since world war 2.
