They already have Jose Valentin who is a better hitter and they have about the same range on defense, and they are both pretty old.

Besides the Yankees are interested in him, and if the Mets showed any interest now they would just be outbid by The Boss.

This from rotoworld:

Mark Loretta will sign a one-year, $2.5 million contract with the Astros, according to his agent.
So much for Eric Bruntlett's big break. This would also seem to make it a lot less likely that Chris Burke will see time at second base this year. The Astros would have been better served by having a left-handed-hitting reserve second baseman, given Craig Biggio's struggles against righties last year, but Loretta is solid insurance at the position. He shouldn't see much time elsewhere with Mike Lamb and Morgan Ensberg still on the roster.

Personally I would take Loretta over Valentin at the plate and in the field.

I'm not a Valentin backer myself after his fade in September and his complete disappearance in the playoffs, but Loretta wouldn't fit into that line up. He's a #2 type hitter and LoDuca is their #2 hitter. Put either of them down in the 8 hole and you've de-valued them. The only guys who were worth considering were Lugo (who they made a significant offer to) and Giles. Hopefully someone like Orlando Hudson becomes available mid season.

Valentin is a good hitter but defensively he is a butcher I saw him play in Chicago many times. Any way I just heard the Astros are about to sign Loretta. I would assume he would me a utility infielder since Biggio is still there. All Star to Utility man the next year...wow

They have a second base at the same level, for less money. Loretta is good, but not great. He will fit fine in the Yankee organization.

Because they wanted Marcus Giles, but he went to the Padres, so they are going to wait and see if more Second Basemen opportunities open up.
