Most are simply bitter due to their failures.

I am hoping to go to a Design/Art School this Fall and my friend and i actually talked about how art students can be snobbish/arrogant because they assume that they are better than everyone else when they get accepted into the well-known/well-reputated schools. However, I agreee with the person who answered that artists should be "public servants" because (for all you artists out there) we are continuously exposing our thoughts and who we really are through our art....and it doesn't make sense to be arrogant or ignorant to other people if we are exposing our perspectives but yet....we can be so narrow-minded to other people's opinions. I hope this helps....and by the way...I was at Staples this morning getting some copies...of this hairstyle thing that I am putting in my drawing....portfolio...and i actually met this cashier girl who goes to an art school...and she wasn't arrogant at all! I had no idea she was an artist....and it was really nice to be able to talk to another artist....who is...seemingly as open-minded and...just...pleasant! It helps to have a positive attitude....when one is an artist.....i know i get overemotional and overdramatic...but it all comes to balance.

Funny you should ask this, just after I blogged again about how artists should play the role of public servant and not "haughty snob."

There is no, NO justification whatsoever for the percieved and/or actual snobbery of artists (which, from my limited knowledge of art history, is a rather recent phenom). I myself have a BFA (studio art degree) and was like this once, mainly in school. Since then I've come to loathe the idea of "artist-as-genius" and realize how humble and down-to-earth the two studio profs I respected most really were.

An artist has his or her gifts, training and skills just as an engineer or guy on a framing crew has theirs. Again, I believe that artists should take up the mindset of a public servant, even if their work never makes it to the public.

Actually no, and an observation: the snobby ones are rarely the real artists. Usually if someone is putting on artist airs it's because they're actually coming up short on the productivity side of being an artist, so they are buying their position with attitude.

I've rubbed elbows a few pretty well known writers, some composers, and I've met a famous painter or two. Usually when they really have the goods, they are pretty humble people, too busy with their work to bother with all that silly pretense.

No, I'm an artist and I'm not snobbish. People have told me I have a great personality, but I have seen plenty of snobbish "artists". Most of them over reactive, emotionally impulsive jerks... just want to let you know there are nice ones out there ;)

Not sure what artists you have encountered, but like any profession, it has its jerks. No, artists are not 'better' than anyone else. Arrogance knows no bounds, however and there will always be those who think highly of themselves, even if they are alone in that opinion. Some of the most creative human beings are also some of the kindest and the most philanthropic. Like the majority of things in life, it takes all kinds.
