It eventually gets better, there is a surprise ending. Its funny actually, but I think there is a lot of hype that it doesn't live up to.

I love it. I thought it was hilarious. I've seen it a good three or four times. I laughed alot. I thought Greg Kinnear's character was, albeit an asshole, hilarious. I even liked Toni Collette whom I normally don't like. The grandfather was the best. "PULL THE TRUCK OVER! YOU'RE NOT GONNA KICK ME OUT! SHUT THE FxCK UP!"

It does get better. When the family gets in their van and heads for California it's pretty funny. When the little girl performs in the contest, it lost me. I saw it on an airplane, though and didn't hear the reaction of the audience.

Thought it was a very good movie but then again I like "off the beaten track" kind of films. love all those independant "Indie" films.
My husband even like it and he's into all those action movies.
Hope you watch it and enjoy it.

...I saw the movie when it first came out and really enjoyed it all very much, BUT, not all movies are for all people. If you didn't care for the beginning, the humor and subject matter is pretty consistant throughout. Sorry...it sounds like it's not up your alley :(

Considering you have already invested 40 minutes into the movie..i would suggest you watch the entire movie only if you DONT HAVE ANYTHING TO DO....the movie doesnt pick up much and it remains banal...
Take your pick...and have a nice evening
Cheers

I really liked it, but it's a very dry-humor-type of movie. If you don't find Steve Carell funny or disturbing family events humorous, you will not like this movie.
