They are important because they are the greastest producers of oxygen for our planet. This process plays a major factor when people talk about Global Warming. The greater ammount of oxygen available helps to deter the warming process.
For the pharmecutical side: many illness fighting drugs have been developed from the exotic plants that grow only in Rain Forrest environments, and there are many yet to be discovered. In theory, if we destroy the Rain Forrests, we may eventually destroy the only hopes for curing many major diseases, including cures for cancer. That would s*ck.

Excessive removal of any forestation is not good. Green vegetation takes in the carbon dioxide that we breathe out and produces oxygen that we breathe in. Removal of green vegetation is damaging to our long term survival. The rain forest is important for that reason with their being so much vegetaion. This allows civilization to grow in other parts of the country while the dense rain forest continues to produce oxygen and reduce carbon dioxide. Without the rain forest, earths filter system is being degraded. Also, destruction of the rain forest is destroying the habitat of many animals and the people who live there. Not sure about the Pharmecutical drugs from the rain forest. Don't think they would be anymore important than any other drug. It could be that since many drugs are of the plants, destrucion of the rain forest may severely reduce the Pharmecutical input.

Rainforests are significant through truth timber take in carbon dioxide and placed across oxygen. This slows down the greenhouse result. also many of the plant life present day in Rainforests might want to be utilized to make vaccines, remedies and medicines for diseases.

The rainforest, while not only the largest producer of oxygen in the world, still holds many undiscovered species of plants and animals. It is believed that testing some of these plants and animals could give us cures to many diseases that plague us. Many pharmaceutical drugs have come from research that has been done involving plants and flowers in the rainforest.

Hi! I believe that not only for pharmaceutical reasons, but also for the environment. A rainforest, such as the Amazon Forest, functions as a point of equilibrium for the biosphera and, as you mentioned source for pharmaceutical drugs that can provide the cure for many diseases. It is said that not more that 10% of their potencial was actually researched, so there's a great field to work in!

For part one, animals breathe in oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. Plants breathe in carbon dioxide and breathe out oxygen. It is a symbiotic relationship we have with plants. Rain forests are the biggest source in oxygen on the planet. If the rain forests are all chopped down, then we must make sure we have plenty of plants and especially trees around the earth to compensate for the loss of the trees in the rain forests.
I am not sure about part two, although I have heard that they have been finding some plants in the rain forests that have special properties that aid in healing. As the rain forests are chopped down, some of these other plants are also lost.
