Don't be cheap when it comes to your laundry! I have four kids and they get muddy, musty and yucky! I use TIDE and TIDE only...I NEVER substitute. I buy it at Dollar General for $5 a bottle. It's much more expensive at Wal-Mart, Target and such. Coupons are available online and in your Sunday paper!

There are some things I don't skimp on. Laundry detergent is one of them. Find somewhere else to save. Tide is my favourite, followed by Sunlight. On the less expensive side, apparently Gain is good. But seriously, if you go with a cheaper brand, you'll just wind up using more detergent, spending more in the long run, doing more laundry and wrecking your clothes because you're adding more detergent to get them as clean as you would with the higher end sutff.

The lowest price is Melaleuca Detergent. It gets all the stains out too. It is really concentrated and lasts a long time unless you have a humongous family and are washing non-stop.

They have an internet site and you can have it mailed to your door. They also have the lowest price for all the other cleaners.
Check out Melaleuca.com

I use Purex, it works well and isn't watered down like some of the real cheap brands. Also for fabric softner I use snuggle and dilute it by half and it still works well. Some of the new washing machines will tell you to dilute the fabric softner...good luck with what ever detergent you choose.

We like All, and Purex. We were using Sun for a while, but it wasn't getting my construction-worker-hubby's clothes clean. If you get onw with a color-safe bleach alternative, even the grubbiest grub comes out. Best bet is to watch for the ones with bleach alternative to go on sale (even the cheap ones tend to be about a buck more with this) and use it only on your grubbiest- the stuff your son plays ball in, work jeans, etc- and use the regular version of the cheap brand for regular dirty clothes.

I swear by Tide. I have two kids that get dirty and I myself work in a nursing home so I need something that gets the yuck out of our clothes. Tide is the only detergent that does that.

Look for a liquid generic detergent. Powders sometimes don't break up in cold water. I use Surf in the gigantic container.

I use purex liquid. It is about $2.75 at your local dollar store. I have used it for years. It cleans just as well as the higher priced detergents and has a clean smell.

I much prefer a liquid because it dissolves and doesn't leave powder marks in the wash. I see from the replies that our American cousins still have Tide. I haven't seen that for years in the UK. My Granny used it, she also used one called Omo. Can you imagine today saying you have washed your clothes with Omo.....people would think we washed our dishes in Fairy Liquid.!

I go to Big Lots and buy Purex or Sun--whatever is the cheapest. Our clothes are not filthy dirty. We only wear them once and change them so no need to spend a fortune on Tide or All.
