i have a computer with 2 network adapters (one of them used for the cable from the server and the other is connected to the laptop) and a laptop. i want to share the internet connection on the laptop. the isp gave me only one ip(and i have to pay for another one). what settings should i make on the laptop in order to have internet on the laptop. i hope you understood.(ip,subnet mask, default gateway, dns)

If you don't want to spend the money on a router (http://www.linksys.com). You can use Internet Connection Sharing on the machine that is connected to your ISP. Here is a tutorial on how to set it up. http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_ics/networksetupwiz.htm

I think you need a wireless router, if I am understanding your question. You only need to pay for one internet connection. Get a wireless router, which will "feed" off the desktop's connection. Then you have 2 computers on the same internet connection. Make sense?

Best Buy has them, I have been told Linksys is the best (it's what I have).

Connect a router to the ISP connection and then connect your PCs to the router.
