Hello,
I've done this trip many many time (but from Montreal to NYC...) by plane/car/train and bus...so, here is my advise...
Here are your 2 choices:
BY Train, check out Amtrak's web site at http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Amtrak/HomePage , You can buy a round trip ticket for about 130$. The train is quite enjoyable but it is very long, it take between 9 to 10 HOURS. So be sure to have a whole day to spend traveling to Montreal and a whole day coming back...I'm not sure if they have any night trips...I didn't see any...there's seems to be one departure per day.
BY Bus: Check out this web site http://www.ny.com/transportation/port_authority.html
you can find here all the major bus lines that comes to Montreal...I chose Greyhound (but others may be cheaper...) and you have a round trip for 120$ but by bus it takes about 7 hours. Plus you can make the trip at night, so you can sleep on the bus and be in Montreal in the morning and have your day to spend there...I don't know if your trip is all planned, but from Montreal we have great packages (Hotel+bus) to NYC for 300-400$ for 3 days, these are great deals...you should check out your News papers and ask a travel agent if you can't get a deal like that to come here...

My choices would be...first choice, by plane, but I guess you don't want ( do you know that a round trip plane ticket to Montreal is around 350$...it's not to bad...and it take a little more than 1 hour! ) that and second by bus...I wouldn't do it by train and if I had no choice I would drive.
Have a nice trip!

I've done the train, the bus and driving. If you can't drive, then by all means use the bus. If there are problems on the tracks, you are stuck...no getting off. If there are problems on the highway the bus can detour. I will never take the train again to NY, it is way too long, on my last train ride it took 3 hours just to get from the border into Montreal (normally a 30 - 45 minute ride). Enjoy your visit.

Yes.
Your best bet is to take the Amtrak. Their route to Montreal is called ther Adirondak and runs once or twice per day. The fare is not too expensive (I don't have exact figures offhand, but it bet it is about $150 round trip, maybe less). It is a long ride (6-7 hours at least), but it is a nice, goes thru the Adirondaks, through Saratoga Springs and near Lake Champlain. The train has a food service car, where you can get snacks, sandwiches, pizza even beer/wine/ liquor. Be sure you have your passort, they used to be pretty lax at the border, but now they require passports.
The other alternative (not recommended) would be to take the bus. Adirondack Trailways runs a bus up to the border, and I believe there is a connection just before you cross. But it takes FOREVER, the bus is cramped, and it may not be any less, and if it is less, very marginally.
visit amtrak.com for more details. You'll enjoy the train ride.

I would choose the Greyhound bus over the train. There are overnight busses (which maximises your time in the city), and in total the trip is only 8 hours long. There are also several departures each day.

By contrast, the train usually takes 12 hours, or longer, as you can bet on waiting at least two hours at the border. There is only one train per day.

Another option for you to consider would be ridesharing. Check out craigslist, as well as the classified sites of local colleges and universities, for people who are looking for someone to drive with them. Sometimes they'll let you go with them for free; other times you just share the cost of gas.

i observe you're no longer getting any solutions, and that i've got looked everywhere in the internet and could't locate lots yet i'm no longer conscious of the Montreal section. It sounds like through Rail runs a prepare, 3 days each and every week, and that's all i will locate. i contemplate whether you should submit this interior the Quebec section, which you will locate down on the backside between different international places. They positioned it break free Canada with the aid of fact many human beings submit there in French, yet once you show regret nicely on your loss of French and ask in English, you should get something. worth a try.
