I have a 12 yr old son on strattera. The med- does not seem to be working.I'm not dr. but i dont want to put him threw this medication and threw that medication. He has trouble at school with his grades,he says he cant sit in his chair for the length of time, and is always messing with other children and not paying attention when he is supposed to. I have 3 other children, He runs circles oround them, i have a four yr old that cant handle him, and i thought it should be the other way, where my four yr old is running circle's oround him.He has to be told several times to get on with his homework and to do his chores, he does have rules to follow. He is a child that needs more attention than my others do.He is a very very hyper child and his attention span his short. So im not sure if he needs to be on these medication or its just somthing eles.any advice would be great.

Need to change his environment and show him how to behave properly and discipline him more. Good luck.
Try natural approches before you seek medication...

I agree with Stepup189...change the environment that he is in at school. You may not need to discipline him more, but definitely tightem the reins on him. Let him know that his behavior is inappropriate, and correct him when needed.

How much sugar is in his diet? Is he allowed treats on school days? Does he drink a lot of natural juices or sodas? If so, try to not let him have those things. They are very high in sugar, and may affect his attention span and energy level. I know they say that sugar does not cause hyperactivity, but I am beginning to not believe them.

I took my sons off of all sugars that I can, except for the sugars in their meals, and their attitudes and attention spans have improved dramatically.

If all else fails, you need to take him to see a Doctor. Don't let them diagnose him with anything without doing more testing on him, though. He may have ADD/ADHD, or another behavioral issue. But, only a qualified Doc can diagnose this.

I would ask his pediatrician what other meds he recommends. IE: Concerta is another medication to ask about. See this article from medicinenet.com about helping him cope in school and at home. Good Luck.

Does he see a therapist? I would look into that.
