Yes, while it's not "normal", it is to be expected. It one of the many negative consequences of the IUD. That's one of the reasons we counsel women to consider just about every other contraceptive choice available OTHER than the IUD (many doctors won't even insert them anymore). There's a reason the IUD got such a bad rap several years ago and essentially shut down one pharmaceutical company (remember the Dalcon shield?). IUDs are notorious for severe cramping, heavier than usual periods, back/leg aches, perforated uteruses, pelvic inflammatory disease, and the fast spread of STDs (the bacteria just love to grow on it). Even though is a typical complaint, I would recommend you make your doctor aware of what you are experiencing.

I had the copper IUD put in 1 1/2 years ago. You can felt the same thing. Every-time I had my period my stomach would ache, My back. After the first month everything was good. I still get cramps every now an then. You have to remember that you just put something foreign in your body and it wants to get it out. I say wait a week and if it does not start getting better see your doctor.

I would definitely give the Dr a call. I have the Mirena and had a slight back ache for a few days. Never noticed any type of swelling in my lower stomach.

There was a House episode where a woman found out that she was allergic to the copper and that got her really sick. House is a genius, but you're not his patient. Check with your doctor.

I got mine in during my period and I was crampy the entire time. Use a heating pad. If it goes on much longer (like a week) you might want to call your doc and see what she says.

I would DEFINITELY call the doctor who inserted the IUD and find out if this is normal. It doesn't sound it. And out of experience, just to let you know, those aren't supposed to be left in for a long time. Ask him/her about that also.

OMG I didn't know they were still around. They can make your pmt worse and cramps worse during menstruation. Not right, but a couple of more days and you will know.
