I am hoping to extend my family soon, and are looking for a decent, but inexpensive medical/hospital plan. I need a medical/hospital plan, that would cover everything related to the pregnancy and birth and worst case scenarious. Does any of you South Africans have any advice?

Government hospitals are good but it is always advisable to get yourself a medical aid to go to a private hospital. That helps on two fronts - it create space for the more needy, while at the same time gives you an increased assurance of getting what you want for your family.

You may find useful information on this site www.medicalschemes.com. The South African government has put some strict laws on all schemes, mainly because it tries to protect consumers of the services provided by this schemes; so I would advise that you should read offerings by a couple of this schemes before making a decision. Good luck.

South African hospitals are ok. My advice is...Take out a medical aid that you will trust. Government hospitals are the cheapest but I'm sure you don't want your wife stuck in a ward where she has to compete with ohter mothers screaming for the nurses attention.

Rather pull out that extra bit of cash and make sure your family is healthy

Just remember that you get what you pay for. And to be stuck in South Africa without medical aid is not a very good idea.
