Because we are humans, social beings who have the need to belong to a group of other humans and the larger the group the better we feel.
To maintain this groups we have to fit in and keep to the group trends and practices sometimes not what we really want but we view the company as a greater good.

We, the human beings, are social animals. We love to have company and live among the folks. So we need others and at the same time, each and every individual is an integral part of the society. So we have to please others and at the same time, we have to make ourselves happy. It is a balancing act. If one side goes too far the balance will be tilted.
Your mission in this life is not to make others happy. It is to make everyone happy including yourself.
You have plenty of self-love. So you count yourself too much. You cannot measure your life with a balance sheet. Life sometimes gives you more; and sometimes takes from you more. But you have to live.
Nevertheless let me tell you, it is a good question.

We as humans always seek approval in some form all around in our life. When we are young - we find we are classified 'good' or 'not good' or 'bad' based on our actions -this sets the base and attention seeking continues like that and becomes part of us. (Read Wayne Dyer's - What do we want for our children)
If we look at our selves we observe - even when we are without some acquaintance (say alone while travelling) many of us keep try to 'impress' or 'influence' some one - this is the sign of that attention seeking

The old asserting " the grass is often greener " is quite quite felt by skill of many human beings. i think many human beings desire what we do not have or they have self assurance they may be extra constructive off if that they had so & so's ???. I say we would desire to be happy with what we've as we are suited and delightful the way we are !

Every human beings has a desire to be wanted and to be liked. Whether you admit it or not you try to do things to please others. That's a good thing to an extent but some people have reached the point where their whole life is bent on making others happy and they get miserable if they don't please other people.

I guess the best way is to find the balance. we cant live in a life that only please people, or just please ourselves. Both are extreme, and could be irritating to others or yourself. There must be a way to balance it a little bit.
If both can not be done at the same time, think if there is other compensation or other ways to make each side acceptable.

we try to please so that we can have good relations with the people we love or like to be around us. but there is a limit to it. we r just human beings not god. there is no way we can please everyone. but again we try hoping that we might get lucky and make everyone happy. if you are happy then only you can make others happy. first on the list should be yourself. be happy!

You cannot make everybody to bend to your way, so try to bend or accommodate everybody to make them happy.
