With the silver membership you can simply talk to people online. But with a gold membership you can play against others, download videos,games, and much more.

Gold just allow you to play online whereas silver is just a lame exuse to say that you can go onto xbox live. Try the 1 month free Gold before you decide to pay. I Rather play offline than pay that subscription.

You can talk to friends. You can play online but your not going to be able to play multiplayer games, without a gold membership.

with the silver you can't play online, but you can talk with friends and go to the xbox marketplace.
with gold you can play all games online, plus get tons of free game updates, free demos, and lots of other stuff.
