My car has done that. It's the sediment in the gas tank. My mechanic suggested that I switch to mid grade gas (89 octane) because my engine light came on continuously after that. I haven't had a problem since. Good luck!

You can either buy one of those code readers for your car or disconnect the battery to reset everything. If you have fuel injection or something like that, the fuel sensors probably thought there was an engine problem, so the engine light is staying on.
If you reset it, the light should stay off if there isn't a real problem.

What year and make of car ?
Did you have the gas cap off or loose while the engine was running ?

it should quit coming on after 3 or 4 start cycles (depend what kind of vehicle), assuming everything else is okay. you can disconnect the battery momentarily to clear the light alert
