Its from a worn out hydrolic lifter. The lifters begin to lose there ability to hold oil preasure in them when the car is cold. Once the oil thins and heats up the lifters fill withoil and you lose the knocking. Chance are itsn't not really hurting anything. Head work is expensive, and probably not worth it on a 17 year old car. Drive it till she blows, the knocking adds character.

Your car has cam ground pistons which are oval when cold and round when warmed up. This design decreases friction in your engine for better fuel economy. Now that your car is older, the pistons have worn and will make noise when your engine is cold. Thank Japanese technology for that. You'll never hear that noise on an American car.

Valve...Tap...Next time you change your oil, add lucas oil stabilizer to the normal amount of oil you put in...You can't ever get rid of a valve tap, without a new engine, but this will reduce, and might be unnoticed..

the fact that the car is 17 years old might be a factor. Be glad that it still runs and gets you from place to place
