I am 6'00", 168lbs. My shirts are 15 1/2" necks, 34" sleeves. A 42 Regular suit jacket off the shelf fits me like it was made specifically for me. Yet any knit sweaters that I buy (even the same brand as my blazers) that fit me in the shoulders perfectly and in the body perfectly have sleeves that are about 3-4" too long! It's annoying because I can't wear a sport coat over them. It even looks funny with my leather jacket. I have no idea what it would cost to have them tailored or if they could even do that. Most of the sweaters aren't even worth that.

So my questions are:

Does anyone else have this experience?
Why do manufactures do that?
What do I do about it?

Thanks in anticipation!

Sweaters are of a material that over time both will stretch and shrink whereas blazers do not.

I honestly don't know

Most sweater styles these days are baggy and long sleeved. Look in your average catalog and you'll see that all men's fashions seem to look for baggy rolled up sweaters that bunch on the sleeves. The typical exceptions are V-Neck fitted sweaters, and some turtleneck, fitted sweaters. Good luck.

sweaters are usually made out of stretchable material; while blazers (since they're made for more formal wear) are not. so maybe that's the reason why your sweaters have sleeves that seem to be too long for you.

sometimes i think the manufacturers of the sweaters intentionally make the sleeves a bit longer so you can sort of bunch them up at the ends. i dunno.. :p

and yes, it does happen to me too :) doesn't bother me too much, though.

to avoid too much stretching of the sweater's sleeves, just make sure you dry them properly. don't place them in a dryer.

They're designed differently.

Blazers are designed to be flush with your wrist when arms are down, relaxed at your sides. They are not made of a flexible cotton cloth.

Sweaters are completely flexible and elastic, and are designed to snuggle your wrist even when your arm is extended up in front of you.

Simply put, it's because they're different.
