Well I am an american citizen, but my husband is not. We went to Puerto Rico and when we were coming back, one of the security guards saw that my husband's id was temporary (it was not expired) and asked for my husband's passport. I asked why, since they say you do not need passport and he said that we should have it anyways because his id was temporary. Well he let us pass, but what if he wanted to give us trouble? The week after one of his friends went to PR and had no problem at all, so it depends who do you find when you are there. I would take my passport.

What ever you use to get past Boston Immigration would be the same thing you will have to use to get past the USVI immigration.

Yes. They will need to see your Visa and residency permit in order to allow you to depart and enter the country. My son has a haitian passport and we just experienced this several days ago.
