My son is 10 1/2 months old and I need to get him weaned from breast to cup/bottle. It's just a personal preference for me here and I feel that it is time. (Hopefully by a year old) My first weaned himself at 6 months but my second is not wanting this AT ALL. I have tried several different bottles/ cups and he WILL drink out of them, but screams and reaches and practically attacks me for nursing. He is already walking and will walk up to me and just scream! He will reach and tug on my clothes until he is nursed. I am really at a loss for what to do. I have tried absolutely everything I know to do. I am still producing milk but it can't be that much. I am not even having to wear nursing pads anymore. He goes and stays with my mom sometimes and he will be fine for her all day but as soon as I walk in the door he starts screaming. He will keep screaming until I feed? I just feel guilty because I feel like he doesn't understand why I won't feed him. Is he old enough now? Should I just let him scream through it? It's really hard because I want to hold and comfort him but the minute I pick him up .. thats what he goes for. My midwife suggested a small amount of pepper or hot sauce on the breasts.. I tried this but he acted like it wasn't even there. He didn't even make a face or flinch .. just kept on nursing! Suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated.

BTW.. I have gotten him down to only 2 or 3 feedings... it's just those few I cannot seem to wean from.

Nuby makes a soft top spout that most babies will take.
My youngest son loves to drink out of a cup with a straw. He drinks more milk now than ever before. Munchkin makes them for 9 month old. Try that.
They kind of look like the link below except they have big handles. I got mine at Target but for some reason they don't have them up on the website.

I breastfed EXCLUSIVELY for the first year. No bottle, no pacifier, NOTHING but breast milk. I HAD to stop because of a medical issue. It was hard. BUT, after a day or two, my son had to accept it. One morning he woke up to the breast, that afternoon I was rushed to the hospital, and was put on meds that I could not breastfeed with. That was it. There was no weaning process. He cried for a couple of days. What we did was just distract him. My husband took over BIG TIME, for seeing me in the room made it worse for our baby. So, he went from the breast to a sippy cup that had a 'bottle-like' nipple on it. My husband would hold him in a nursing position for the first few times. After our son got a hang of the cup, He thought it was 'cool' that he could walk around and drink, and wasn't strapped to mom. If it's possible, spend a night or two at your mom's house and let your husband take over. By the time you get back, your baby should be fine.

I nursed my son until he was 14 months old. He didn't want it anymore after that. He still uses a bottle to drink from but also has a sippy cup.
Sometimes, its still nice when the baby still gets boob in the morning and before his bedtime. What's so wrong with that? Unless he has a lot of teeth and is biting you, why not continue with it as long as he wants. You can still give him a little formula in a bottle too if you wish. Babies can start drinking cow's milk at 1 year.
Nursing is demanding, but 2-3 times is very good now. He loves it. He won't be a baby forever and once it's over, it's over. Cherish these times now.

Most children should be nursed until the age of two, so to say 10 months is enough...hmmm?
It sounds like the child is traumatized by not getting enough "mommy" time. I know it can be rough when you have a demanding child, but it is worth the time now to make the child feel secure. Give him what he needs, human milk for human babies! Try weaning again in a couple of months, after he is a little older, maybe he will appreciate the cup more at that time.

that is what I did , then it went to only before bed time...it takes time that's why it's called weaning...soon they will stop if you are persistent

Try having your partner give him his cup when it is time. or maybe you need to try bottles. If those don;t work and you are not willing to let him cry it out then you might have to keep nursing for a few more months. He might not be ready.

Penelope Leach knows all. You sound like you're getting there.

All the infor you will ever need is at this site. They have chat sessions too. Good luck. My suggestion is to put the breast mil in the cup and show your child he can get the same mile there, but it seems more of letting go of mom.
