I am writing a book and wanted to know where to find a good agent to represent me to publishing companies. Any suggestions?

The annual writer's market or the LMP, Literary Market Place, have agent listings. The best route to take to get your book published is a literary agent, yet to have one represent you is almost as though as to have your book published by a small publishing house. There are also articles and books on how to contact literary agents that might be worth reading.

I'm afraid you have to look very hard....

... some writers even had to publish things and distribute their first writings for free....

I do not mean to discourage you but you can go for best seller books and look at the names of the publishers on these books then contact them...

I wish you the best of luck.

LMP is certainly a good reference. You might also want to check out THE AGENTS DIRECTORY (Everything You Need to Know to Sell Your Book or Script) by Rachel Vater or WRITER'S DIGEST (annual) GUIDE TO LITERARY AGENTS.

Actually, it's probably a good idea to look at more than one source to have the broadest range of names/agencies for your particular genre.

Best of luck.

This may sound crude and sexist, but being pretty can be a major plus.
Publishers love to put a pretty face on the back cover.
