This is the case with every computer around. In fact, if you also check your hard drive size, you'll find that it too is slightly less than the advertised capacity.
The reason for this is because your computer sort of re-arranges the structure of your ram so that it is 100% compatible with that particular machine. (This is commonly called "Formatting") In this process, a few MB are typically lost. It's nothing to be worried about; its that way on every computer, for all forms of storage media (RAM chips, Flash chips, Hard Drives, etc).

Because your video card or your gpu is requiring more speed so there fore it needs more ram.You should upgrade the ram I have office 07 1 gig of ram and a amd sempron and it takes me about 2 sec to boot Microsoft word.Imagine I had your specs it would take forever.Your laptop is old buy a new one or upgrade the ram try 512 see if your laptop supports it.Check out crucial

the system itself uses some of the ram for running its programs and storying important files that makes the computer go. when you buy ram its always like 128, 256, 512, 1 gig and so on. they dont really make a 266, so when youve got a 256, 16 of it is system files. and the rest is yours. its not much... im on a laptop too. and i have never had a storage prob. . hope that helps!

I had the same problem with my psp memory stick. Someone has probably said this already but some of it goes to the video card and some even go to the hard drive for some dumb reason. You cant change it. I would reccomend going to a bigger ram anyway. Thats a good choice.

It sounds like you have 16MB RAM that is used for the video card. This is typical in systems that have an integrated video card. Nothing to worry about.

From what I've been told, a bit of memory is hidden and assigned to other operations by default.
