The Ivy League refers to a set of schools on the eastern seaboard which are historically significant and have high academic standards. Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, William and Mary, that sort of thing. Technically, the phrase refers to their athletic conference (see below link) but the term predates modern athletic conferences. The connotation of the term "Ivy League" alternates between academic respect and mockery for the upper class and "good ol' boy" system.

As usual, answers that are definitely wrong! What's with people anyway?
The "Ivy League" is an athletic league that was formed about 50 years ago. The members of the league are the most prestigious colleges in the USA. There are eight: Dartmouth in NH, Harvard in MA, Brown in RI, Yale in CT, Cornell and Columbia in NY, Princeton in NJ and UPenn in PA. These are all private colleges that are very highly respected for their long history of distinguished academic achievement. Admission to any of these schools is very competitive and is regarded as an honor for any high school student who is accepted.
The top three IVy schools are Harvard, Yale and Princeton, which are routinely regarded as the top three schools in the USA. But all ofthe IVy schools are very highly respected.
There are a few other schools that are considered to be in the same level as the Ivies. That would be Stanford in CA, Duke in NC and possibly Univ of Chicago, Emory, Washington Univ in MO, and a couple others. Sometimes other schools are called "Little Ivies" or "Southern Ivies" or "Western Ivies" in imitation of the real Ivy League.
