I have recently downloaded Spamfighter from the internet it is apparently Microsoft Certiified. It is however, only a free trial. There is also some software called VirusFighter developed by the company Norman. Are they any good?
If not , can you advise me on any good down-loadable software, to protect my PC, preferably free of charge.

Hiya:
Why not try AVG anti Malaware 7.5? It has basically all except a firewall.
Also think about downloading a firewall and some Adaware programs like AD Aware SE and Spybot Search and Destroy.
For free programs try looking for the magazine PC Advisor which has lots of free programs.

most virus are spread through IE. IE is not a safe browser. you should use a more secure browser to protect your PC from virus.
i recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar. firefox can block any any popup and disable any virus and adware, spyware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE browser. as you know, most of virus spread throught internet and webpage.
besides, firefox is much smaller than IE, so it run faster than IE.

i've never heard of the programs you mentioned above. my favorite spyware protection is lavasoft ad-aware. it detects just about anything. as for viruses and spam, i use norton internet security. but i do know a lot of people say AVG antivirus is free (norton isn't).
