It may be due to Greg Chappell's over-experimentation during ODIs.

Lack of determination and not good start from the openers is the reason for indian team not to play good in odi's.

Test Matches and ODI are entirely different games. In ODI the batsman will not get sufficient time to settle down before playing strokes as the aim is to accumulate maximum runs possible in 50 overs if batting first or achieve the target set up my the opposition. If the target set up is high, batsman has to start scoring runs quickly and in this process they will loose their wicket, wheres in Test Match since it is of 5 days duration batsman can take his time to study the bowling and settle down before playing strokes.
As far as bowlers are concerned, each bowler can bowl only 10 overs in ODI, whereas in Test Match you can use one bowler for any number of overs. This helps the team as if any particular bowler is out of form, he can be removed from the attack and the bowler who is in best form can be used for any number of overs.

Indian players like Sachin, Laxman, Ganguli, Dravid take a longer time to warm up and indian strength is in the spin bowling that is not well suited for a limit 50 over matches.

they r gud in tests bcoz ther is no limit for overs, while in cricket ther r only 50 ovrs.
they waste many balls while batting. batsmen like laxman, jaffer take time to settle while batting, due to this many balls get wasted, so they r gud in tests than in odi's.
