to 'walk the line' means to behave in a way that doesn't put you on one side or the other of a dispute or an issue, (being careful) not to take sides, to remain neutral, in between.

The line is the "straight and narrow," the path of being a good boy and obeying all the rules. For Cash, that is a Christian thing. But he acknowledged that it was only his love with his wife that kept him on it: "Because you're mine, I walk the line."
I imagine a lot of guys are like that. They behave themselves because they do not want to risk losing their lady love.
Then again, others figure they can always pick up a bad girl anytime they want. Go figure.

Johnny wrote this song for his first wife Vivian. It is about being faithful to her in the face of temptation. Ultimately, of course, he gave in to the temptations, but that is what the song is about.

I guess that I always took it to mean that he'd change his ways and be good and law abiding for the love of his good woman...
Seeing that alot of his earlier songs focused on murder, crime and prison made sense to me.
