You could read about the Ionians of ancient greece who were the first to try out the scientific method - its a tragedy their philosophy died with their culture - Cosmos by Carl Sagan is a good book to read about that.
Many people say that Isaac Newton was the father of modern science since he postulated that nature could be described by physical laws.
