Isn't is a shame that even in our enlightened times we still have doctors who don't take depression seriously and people wjo tell you you are thinking too much about things or have too much time on your hands?
Depression is an illness like anything else and just as you do not make a decision to become depressed, neither can you decide to go and do something more useful with your time - when you are depressed, you are in many ways incapable of changing your environment, your daily schedule, your thought processes. Correction - you CAN do these things, but only with the correct help.
Your first line of attack is to go back to your GP and take a list of all your symptoms which you can hand to him to read, if you feel that would work better. It is what I had to do, because every time I tried to describe my feelings, I burst into tears or, in an effort to avoid doing that, I would try to make light of things.
Your GP may suggest antidepressants and/ or counselling. There is evidence to show that Cognitive Behavioural Therapy works best of all so try to hold out for that - and there is nothing to stop you from suggesting it to your GP as he may be interested to know that you are keen to be involved in your own healing process.
Do not get into the mindset of judging yourself as unworthy with questions like,' What have I to be depressed about?' It doesn't work like that - more often than not it is a chemical imbalance in the brain and it can be treated.
Take whatever treatment is offered you and if you feel you are not being properly supported by your GP, ask to see another in the practice. The longer you leave this, the worse it will become. Good luck.

1. establish a positive routine.
2. inform yourself.
3. get a 2nd, 3rd or 4th etc opinion until you are satisfied.
4. clear all negativity from you life.
5. believe in yourself
6. cry
7. batter a pillow
It will take a lot of time, but it will be worth it. If you have been ill for 8 years think realistically how long it could take to get better. Focus on having a bright future to motivate yourself. life really does get better as you get older.
1. get up at the same time everyday and eat healthy food, which will support your physical health and therefore may address the root of the depression which could be some sort of imbalance; chemical or hormonal. cook your food and take time over it. when you feel confident, invite some1 you feel comfortable with for dinner and relax with them. Go to bed at the same time each night and drink camomile tea before bed. Make sure you get 8 hours a night.
2. read books but avoid internet as you may be misinformed on here!!! there is a lot of rubbish on the net. look for psychology, self help and healthy living and diet books in your library. read about clinical depression, which is a physical illness. you might be able to cure yourself without being bloated and hooked on GP's drugs.
3. see other drs, yours could be a quack! also look into alternative medicine. join a group, get support from others as a therapy.
4. dont keep in touch with people who belittle or abuse you in any way. give energy to people who make you feel good.
5. you are a real person and deserve a good quality of life. .think back to something which made you reallly happy and how that situation was formed, re create that sussess.
6. release anxiety and stress. the body has an effective way of doing this: crying. excercise 3 times a week too.
7. same thing really get it all out but not on you because you are important and precious, a pillow is not, hurt it not you.

That's terrible for you. Depression really is something that just grips you and you feel like you've no control over it, it takes over your whole being. Im sorry the doctors havent helped - having a very understanding doctor can make all the difference. Have you followed their advice though? Honestly the right medication and in the correct dosage works - but if you have taken their advice and it hasnt helped then maybe you could look at holistic treatments? Thai Chi might be good to channel your energy. Also Reiki and even a good powerwalk on the beach. Depression is something to work through but you need support, have u got somebody very understanding to listen to you? Just to be able to say to people, "I'm having a down day". It helps to have people who are understanding of your situation and not be around people who make you feel bad or guilty. Depression is an illness and because its an illness of the mind people tend to overlook the illness because its not visible-although as you've said you have made your illness visible. You should confide in close friends or family, get help and keep getting help, tell people your not okay, because you need to get better and you deserve all the help and encouragement you can get. I know it's painful, it's hard, it feels like nobody understands what you're going through, but work through it and keep working through it- you will get there and don't ever give up on yourself !

First of all, ignore the people that think that drugs & alchohol should be used as an escape from reality.
I've been in your position. I would suggest you see your doctor and he may refer you to a psychologist. This could be something that you may even need medication for. If you do this, be sure you have insurance and the proper coverage or you may end up with a huge bill!
If you prefer to not go that route, I would strongly suggest getting involved in something that you can enjoy. I started seriously taking yoga last year and I feel great. I have been a student I cannot begin to tell you how it's changed my life.
Check out Amy Weintraub's books & CD's. Yoga for depression! She's wonderful and does workshops all over the country.

You need to fill your body with vitamins, minerals and ANTIOXIDANTS. Antioxidants are fighters against free radicals that are caused by stress and cause depression. I personally use VIBE, which is a LIQUID vitamin/mineral/antioxidant formula. I take at least 3 ounces per day and that keeps me full of energy and happy all day. I call it the natural prozac... hahahaha
You can get it over the internet. Try http://www.enivamembers.com/188138
Sometimes, the sadness or depression you may feel is self induced by not eating correctly and not getting enough vitamins and minerals, so there you have it. A quick way to get on track again.

I had the same problem. I finally went to a Dr who sent me to a psychiatrist where I discovered I was Bi-Polar II. Which is a more depressive state than regular Bi-Polar. I have been on medication for several years and the problem is much better. I still get depressed but not as severe and for not long time periods anymore. Seek help you'll be much happier. Good luck.

Depression occurs either as a result of a past trauma or your emotional needs are not being met. Check out the human givens website and find the list of emotional needs and try to identify the area or areas of your life which are missing something or could be worked on. If you can see a counsellor who can help you identify this. I know this as I have been counselled myself in this way for depression. Best of luck.

Sounds like maybe you have too much time on your hands. When we don't know how to deal with free time and life we tend to find things wrong with life. Don't wait to be happy, happiness is a way of life not a goal. Find something that you lifed to do as a child and go back to it. Or something that keeps you busy and you like doing it. I do paint by numbers, (Not the ones for kids), I know it sounds silly, but it does work. We are human so if we have nothing better to do some of us may find things wrong when there is nothing wrong. You just need to find something to channel your feelings.

Depression is a state of mind and only you can get yourself out of it. Learn how to breathe properly you'll be amazed at the result. Try pushing out your abdomen and inflating your lungs when you inhale and pulling in and deflating the lungs when you exhale. You will not only think clearer but feel happier too.

Dont confuse depression with feeling a bit hacked off (that's just "normal human misery". Go see your GP. Depression is caused by a chemical imbalance and can be cured.
