No, an oxygen sensor cannot cause a misfire. The code for a rich or lean oxygen sensor can be set because of a misfiring motor, but it is just a symptom of a condition. The oxygen sensors can be damaged from overheating if a poorly running or misfiring motor is not repaired though. I would first repair the motor, clear the codes, and run and see if the codes reset before getting into sensor replacement. I take it by your question that you have a misfire and a hesistation in this motor. I am also assuming that this motor is mechanically sound. What I would do first is remove every spark plug wire, one by one, from their connection and inspect the metal part of the wire and the tower it connects to, even the coil tower. These had huge problems with corroding spark plug wires, corroded coil towers and dist. cap towers. If that is not the problem, continue checking the plug wires at the spark plugs for the same thing and/or carbon tracking down the wire or the ceramic portion of the spark plugs. You will have to remove the plugs to get a good inspection of them. If nothing is found, I would start looking for vacuum leaks at hoses or intake/TBI gasket areas. If still nothing is found, check the fuel filter for plugging and/or fuel pressure for being low. I'm sure after doing a thorough inspection of the stuff listed here you will find your problem. If not, you will have to get the car onto a scanner to see what kind of readings are going on with the motor while running which can lead you in the direction you need to go from there. Good luck.
