Space reasearch at this point in time is pointless, the world will not need to live in space for centuries. While some research is important, all the missions are a complete waste of money and serve no purpose whatsoever, they are just people living out childhood fantasies and irresponsible governments spending money that isnt theirs because they are not the ones that have to give up anything. If governements and scientists had to live in the same conditions as the poor to prove their commitment to space "research", you would never see anthing whatsoever go into space.
The first thing any space supporter will say is that as a result of research we have many inventions. This is a very naive and biased idea since not only would all those inventions be invented anyway, they would be invented a great deal cheaper, and sooner since they wouldnt be wasting time in space. To use that argument is as brainless as saying you should burn a billion dollars because you might invent a better vacuum cleaner to clean up the mess which is exactly what space research does, it burns up billions and gets a few inventions that would be invented anyway. The telephone the electric light, the radio etc etc, were all invented without going into space. What they fail to take into account is all the inventions that dont get built because people are focused on space rather than on real problems, so any "benefits" are just accidental.
The other is the popular "we are born explorers", which again is nonsense. People explored the world out of neccesity, as well as from a knowledge that there would have to be more to this world because birds fly south etc, so they were going to something definite, only a moron would think they are the only island on the planet. Space however has nothing to do with neccessitty and is only a slight possibility of finding anything of value in the vasteness of it all, thats only possible rather than probable, so its a big difference to early explorers of earth, and is an insult to those pioneers to compare them.

If you are a socialist then the answer will be that the money should be used to help the poor. As human beings we have a duty of care to the rest of the human race, to look after everybody and make sure that all members of the human race are equal in every way. This is set out in the dec. from the UN. This planet can support everybody comfortably, and can produce roughly enough food to provide everybody with around 2700 calories each day. Ample for not just survival but for comfort as well. However, richer countries consume more that their share, which means that somebody else has to go without part of their share. We could use the billions of dollars to provide nutritious food for the poor in our own western countries, and then move on to poorer countries around the world. Space exploration and research is important, but only when we have sorted out the fundamental problems facing humanity today.
In this order: (basic)
Poverty (including nutrition, water, and other indicators of wealth/poverty)
Human rights
Environment
Space exploration

Space is a wonderful place worthwile to visit. If you have a lot of money. Rockets and aircraft cost billions of pounds thats why they argue not to waste it. The sky is a wonderful place, a place where anyone would love to go. It's a place full of magic yet to discover. Who knows what could be beyond. DOwnload a pogramme called google Earth it is fascinating you can find different planets and explore. Futhemore you can actually visit mars. You can obviously see Earth. Its amazing how much is in the sky but this is only one galaxy there are many more things yet to be discoverd. Like have you heard the myhth that people on other planets exist. It's true because one was found on Mars. Just like the water which was found on Mars.

Good question.
Before the 1970's I would have said feed the poor and would have felt justified in my answer. Today however we are in a different ball game. The abuse that we have given this planet and it's response is becoming clearer and clearer. Over population, deforestation and just plain greed have brought us all to the edge of extinction.
The famous theoretical physicist Steven Hawking has said that mankind's only hope of survival is to leave the earth. If anything I believe that we need to accelerate our space program by offering government grants, subsidies and tax breaks to those private companies that are willing to help us move beyond the confines of our world. Governments are now either unwilling or unable to take the risks that our forefathers took. It is up to us to find our way.
Terra-forming Mars via remotely operated facilities is not beyond our current technology but someone needs to make the long term commitment before it's too late. Global warming has begun to take it's toll. If you deny this then you don't watch the evening news or pick up the morning paper. We as an intelligent species need to act globally and work toward the only future we have left. Yes, we do need to take care of our own but in order to to it effectively we must progress both technologically and spiritually. We must have a collective will to do what is right for all of us.
Thanks

I used to believe that it was ridiculous that so much money be spent on the space program when it could be spent on feeding the poor and other humanitarian programs. I was short sighted. The space program is responsible for most of our advancements as a technological society. Important programs, indeed. But at the end of the day, I do believe it is more important to feed and cloth the poor than have outstanding GPS capabilities.

That has a very sharp double edged sword. First instinct would be to feed the poor. But then again, the space research has had direct line to many things we take for granted. With no space research we would have no microwaves.. .no miniturization of technology, no digital bits... no medical technologies like MRI's (which by the way...saved my mother's life), many of the technologies that we use every day. Like the computer you're sitting in front of.... etc.

by using money for space research you invent ways to feed the poor amoung other things. all of our cell phone tech. is atributed tospace, the dehydrated foods ,mres for the soilders ,computers, satilites that bring in what we watch on tv , and a lot of other things are from space research and without that research where would we be today ...definitly not asking and anserwing questions from people whom we dont know from all over the world on computers

Both are great causes, The space program has launched many spin off technologies that spawned products and JOBS that pay taxes and feed the poor. The more jobs the less poor.

To feed the poor, absolutely. I cannot understand why so much money is poured into space research - what is it achieving?

Let the poor feed themselves; except if they are physically or mentally disabled, they should be able to.(and no, any "but, what if's" you can come up with, I won't entertain, because they are just excuses.)
