The most disastrous earthquake struck in Shansi, China 1556. It measured about 8 on the Richter scale and killed an estimated 800,000 people. The death toll was so high because the earthquake destroyed a number of soft clay cliffs in which millions of people lived in artificial caves.


The second next most disastrous earthquake in recent history was the Great Hanshin Earthquake on Jan. 17, 1995 (magnitude 7.2) which killed 6433 people. In JAPAN


Many earthquakes are strong contenders for this spot...... but according to what i think it should be the masive under sea Earthquake near Banda Aceh ,Indonesia on Boxing Day 26 Dec 2004

The next two are:
Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami, in 2004, 287,000 deaths.
Tangshan earthquake, China, in 1976, 255,000 deaths.
