Pencils and notepads are the best things you could give them. Something they can rarely afford of get hold of even if they could.

Speaking in general: no, you shouldnot. At least: not directly. First of all, because of the hassle it will create you; as soon as you give anything to one child, you will have children literally swarming all around you.
A better idea is to make a donation to a local NGO or welfare organization. They should have a sound knowledge of where needs are greatest.
Once, however, I made one exception to this rule I impose also upon myself ( to not give gifts to children ). I freed a Thai under-age prostitute from her slavery by buying her back and bringing her to a local temple. It sure got me into danger and cost a lot of money, but I imagine I managed to save some young girl's life. However, if you decide to do such a thing, donot be queasy or soft-hearted, prepare well, and leave the country as soon as you can afterwards.

Sadly kids are used to 'milk' tourists in most third countries I have visited. It is better to do some searching before hand to locate an orphange in the area you are visiting and donate either clothing (second hand is just as goodand less likely to be flogged off) or equipment that might be needed such as kitchen utencils. Try not to let the poverty around you affect your holiday.

When visiting S-Africa they ask you to not give children sweets, food anything. There are places they can go to , to get fed and shelters. Giving them gifts encourages them to beg and they are trying to stop it. I used to always buy them hamburgers etc and was asked very kindly not to do so. If you give them money they will buy glue and sniff it. Please don't.

Yeah try and think of things that will be useful to them. Not money, as u don't know if it will be used to help them. Pens/pencils and paper or sweets are good, and won't erode your bank balance either!

generally the rules to follow are nothing religion, politics or war related in any way, no money and be careful with what food you give them. i agree with pens and paper definitely, things they can be creative with and also things they can play with (e.g. marbles, board games, balls etc.)
