I am about to start mentoring a 16 year old boy and although I have recieved training on what is expected of me I am interested to hear from people who have been mentored before, or who have been mentors. I know all the obvious things about building trust, good communication, open mindedness etc, but was hoping that you could share your own personal experiences. What would have made the experience better and more useful for you? Are there any mistakes I need to look out for? Thanks for your help.

A mentor is a good Listener and gentle Guide.

Knowing all the facets of mentoring as you do, you should have no problem helping that young fellow with his life; provided that you remember what a Mentor truly is.

The biggest "mistake" you can make is to forget that you are not his controller; not his parent or guardian; not his Deity, but his FRIEND - with skills and life experiences you willingly share.

As such, remember to consider HIS personality and HIS objectives. Patiently inform and instruct him when he seems to go astray or seems to need support. Help him discover his uniqueness and strengths.

In the end, you'll find that you will have experienced total satisfaction yourself; knowing that you gave your BEST to help another.

And that, in itself, is its greatest reward.

Good luck to you!
