I've been a computer repair person for over 14 Years and seldom come across hardware faults (90% software 10% hardware).
It's amazing; the amount of people who come to me complaining that their computer is rubbish because it's 'always breaking down' when all along, he REAL cause of this 'rubbish' computer is the user. The user who installs anything and everything on their poor old computer without any regard to their poor old groaning copy of Windows XP.
I'm talking about installing nefarious software and the like from dodgy sources, do the people who download from limewire, bearshare etc etc really think that their PC is immune to viruses from such sources BECAUSE THEY HAVE ANTI VIRUS SOFTWARE installed? Don't kid yourself.
I could go on and on about this all day long but I'll spare you the pain, just remember to give you copy of Windows a bit of spring cleaning from time to time and it'll reward you by not breaking down as much.
Ok, rant finished, thanks for reading :-p

This rant stems from a neighbour for whom I built 2 PC's for, these 2 PC's were ordered as Christmas presents for her 2 sons.
She came round to my house today and started shouting at me, telling me the computers I built were crap and had broken down already.
Needless to say that after examining both PC's that they were virus ridden despite the copies of Norton Anti virus I installed on both PC's.
After telling her that both PC's had lots of viruses, she decided that the presence of the viruses was all my fault and not her sons.
I told her to contact Microsoft, Norton and the virus creators if she wanted to complain and also to tell her sons to stop disabling NAV, anyway I've password protected NAV now so they can't.
I would care normally but I shopped for and built the PC's for free.

I would agree that the computers are slow and dying because of the software they use =/
Maybe you give them friendly advice on how to keep their computer safe like how to clean their computer up from viruses, cluttered disk space and spyware etc. There are quite alot of people who know sod all about computers so I don't get bothered about it when I was fixing my friend's computer and found out it was full of crap lol.
Its also a good idea to let it out your system and let others help you as well so its a wise choice and you could put it into a blog so people can comment you anytime rather than within 4 days then start putting it all up again.

I agree with you 100 per cent, the people as you say who installs anything and everything, and what I call click happy have no idea what harm they are doing by exposing there much loved computer to these file sharing virus infected websites like bearshare and limewire, and for what, a free download off music, well it's not so free when they have to pay a technician to visit their home and sort out the problem for them, then they have the nerve and cheek to moan that its someone else's fault.

Your right, but why are you complaining?? If the 90% take notice of what you have just said then you will have 90% less work and be most definatley out of job!! You should be telling everyone to go warez and such sites to give you more work!! lol
Well since your additional details, I feel sorry you, my sister was the same when I tried to explain what was wrong with hers, theres just no telling them is there!! Even after she phoned 3 support lines and they told her what i was trying to, silly cow i refuse to try to help her now, as she seemed to think I was an idiot before, when infact she is the idiot and doesnt know the difference between RAM and ROM !!lol

I agree actually. Me ex is constantly talking about having to format his computer and how his computer is knackered.
I was at his house and he had downloaded something - music or a film or something. He opened it without scanning it for viruses. When I pointed that out he said "yeh but my virus checker blocks a lot of the things I download so I dont bother"
My response - "thats why your computer is always knackered then"
I no longer accept files from him!!!

Thanks for this tip... seriously. Can you please explain what you mean by "occassional spring cleaning". Is there a program I should run to do this, like Disk Defragmenter or Virusscan or something like that? I'm familiar with those two but am not a computer expert. I'm one of these folks who downloads stuff, so I want to take heed to your advice.
It's nice that you have the customer service skills to really CARE about what you do.

It is quite annoying.
I had a customer complaining her wireless router wasn't working.
It turns out she put the router box on top of her desk expecting it to magically connect "wirelessly" without even plugging it in.
Many others here resolve there problems with a system restore.
