Depends what package you want. Best bet is to go into one of the phone shops and talk through the different packages you could take, as it depends how you use the phone. Texts can be anything from free to 15 pence.

usually 10p but if you get a contract you can around 500 free a month and a free phone. if you use your phone a lot look into the contracts, it has worked out much cheaper for me and i get a decent handset every 11 months

I have a Pay & Go and my texts are cmpletly free. Yet when i was on contract with them they were quite stingy with the texts.

Its 10p but if you get a new sim card you can get 300 free msgs :) therefore costs you nowt :D
