While I have no problem with my tax supporting people who genuinely cannot work and support themselves, who else feels our taxes are going to people who dont deserve it either from laziness or their choices?
All the way through my life, I have made smart long term decisions for the future. I came from a poor background but I managed to get an education, I never resorted to crime, I didnt take drugs and I didnt have children and wont until such time that I am ready. I have found a good job, I work hard and I save as much money as I can for that rainy day, although in truth I just about get by.
If I had utterly cocked my life up, made some shitty life choices & maybe spawned a few bastard kids, I know from people who live close to me that I would be living better then I do now.
Is it me or has the welfare state got to the stage where there is no point making an effort any more? Im never going to be rich anyway, so why not get the money as a handout and enjoy life without work?

I HAVE got an education Carla, I worked my *** off to pay for myself to get all the way through my a-levels to university.
Of course, if I just knocked out a few kids I needn't have bothered and I could be watching Trisha right now from my council house.

I do agree with you in general, but I'm not sure what you're proposing. If I'm honest, I've made some shitty life choices which thanks to support from my friends and family I've got out of without incontrovertably ****ing up my life. Making mistakes is part of being human and not everyone has the resources, be them financial, emotional or mental to recover from those mistakes.
Congratulations on making something of yourself from humble roots. I've done the same thing but to those that don't, what solution are you suggesting? Make them live like animals on the street? Unfortunately, where a welfare state exists, some people will abuse it. You have to make peace with that.
Carla - I think you are the ****, sweetie.
Convince Pete - Wow, spectacular way to completely miss the point.

I think the UK benefit system is a symptom of allowing British industry to be destroyed and pushing us into the grotty food, cheap goods shopaholic nightmare that we are in now. Without industry there are too few jobs. You have to do something with the unemployed if it was you....as a government, that caused the situation in the first place......Without industry there is nothing.....Running it down was a huge mistake. I say lets get Britain back into the real world. start buying food to eat, not to throw away. buying clothes that last, not volumes of cheap crap that doesn't. Stop importing cheap crap and start producing our own products. We need a rebuild. We need a new way of thinking in parliament. We need a government that puts British interests first. The only reason our benefits system is at breaking point is that we have an open border sittuation that STILL, even though we are broke, allows thousands into the country, and onto benefits every week. Insanity from our own parasite infested parliament, and the jack boot Nazi mentality of the EU is at fault here. not the system.

In any social system, Health, Criminal Law, Benefits ....
You are going to get people who cheat the system. Its the Achilles heal of the system in that to make it fair and easy for the ones you need to protect, Some of the 'guilty' get off Scott free as well.
The judicial system is set up so that the chances of an innocent going to jail are almost zero, thus many guilty get off as well.
The health system is set up so that those who need the care quickly can do so, but the free loaders who cheat the system exploit this.
And the benefit system is set up to catch any deserving case who falls through our community. Unfortunately the free loaders are a very visible section of the community, and as they are free to drink too much, smoke too much and have lots of free time, they are also a very loud and hard to ignore parasite to many of our towns.
However, if we are to help those who really need the help, under the present system, we are going to have to accept that some idiots will always find methods to work around the rules. There has to be a better system, that's the real challenge, making a system which gets rid of the few social diseases without affecting the many who really do need benefit help.

It's not really about f*cking up thier lives. As you say, they are better off than you now, so maybe it is a wise choice by them!
In some cases, it can be seen as a reward, but mainly its out of need. So, NO is the answer to your question.
Why not get the handouts indeed?
Well, if you work because you need the money, then go ahead and get some freeeeeeee money. If you work because of the need to be fufilled and for interest reasons, then no, stay in work.

You should read a book called The Selfish Gene. It says that a welfare state is counterproductive because you are subsidising the weak and poor.
I wouldnt go quite as far as this book does, the welfare state is a great and necessary thing in my opinion, but theres an awful lot of work-shy idiots trying their best to repopulate this country.

It's the same in the US unfortunately. I work in the medical profession, and it's the lazy uneducated people who end up getting Medicaid (free healthcare), food stamps (free food), money to send their kids to daycare, and housing. Oh yeah, and the illegal immigrants love our free healthcare system too. I'm regretting the 6 semesters of French I took in college b/c half of my patients no speaka english.
I've gotten very cynical in the last 10 years seeing all of it.....go figure. I'm a single mom with 2 degrees working full time as a nurse. I have my own health insurance, have a paid off used car, own my own condo, and manage to take a few vacations. But I feel like I live paycheck to paycheck a lot. Good luck to you:)

Good for you. Your life is o.k, but the reality is its not like that for every-one. You sound bitter or jealous that you can't be the unemployed person receiving benefits watching Trasha. Believe me you can't have much of a life on government hand outs its not luxury like how u think. Without welfare your security would be more threatened than it is now with all the crime that would be going on.

I totally agree with you.
And this state-sponsored dependence is now inter-generational. These scum genuinely believe they are ENTITLED to all the free stuff they get. Makes my blood boil......
