As a career industry writer and coach, I hope the following advice helps.
In the first scenario, ask yourself two questions: (1) What do I love about my job?; and (2) What do I hate about my job? Do include such criteria as salary, benefits, vacation, environment, supervisor, and coworkers, as well as any other issues that matter to you. If the "hates" outnumber the "loves," you should then ask, (3) Are the causes within my control? If you answer "no--issue are not within my control" to the majority of hate issues, you probably won't be happy staying with this job and should explore new career opportunities that match both your skills and your career/life goals. If you don't know exactly what your skills are and don't have exact goals, then it's time to do some work with either a good career coach (paid), your state's employment office (free services), or books like "What Color Is My Parachute" or "Do What You Love and the Money Will Follow" (Do It Yourself--DIY).
In the second scenario, you may find that you actually have more "love" than "hate" issues, but still feel bored. If this seemed like your "dream job" when you started it, perhaps you are no longer being challenged to use your talent efficiently. One course is--on your own initiative--to find areas within your organization that you personally can improve--i.e., find a problem and work on its solution. Let your boss know via a written memo, so your accomplishment is documented in your work record.
The missing challenge could also be on a more personal level, e.g., you could take some job-related or cross-training courses to increase your expertise, effective range, perceived value (as perceived by management), and your self-esteem.
P.S. Don't ruin another vacation worrying about your job. Take action soon.

Try to get involved in other interesting projects or try to get another job in-house (look on their vacancy board). Or re-train, go and do something different but make sure you make yourself happy. You need to decide whether you hate your job because you hate your job or just because its after xmas/new year.... If its just because of the holidays, I promise this will pass but if not you should investigate what would make you happier in your professional life.

You won't like this answer, but think about it.
