That without pain there is no joy. . .
In other words, we can learn great lessons when we are down, and appreciate life that much more as a result. . .

Pain, in all its forms has taught me that I can endure it. I have learned that I shouldn't fear pain even though at times I still do. It has taught me to enjoy every moment I can because who knows when the fun will be over. It has taught me not to hold back because if it does go wrong I can get through it and if it goes right it will be worth it.
I, however have never been tortured, I have never been starved, I have never been repeatedly raped, I have been bereaved but my family have not been the subject of some massacre. I would imagine that if you were to ask someone who has been subject one or more of the above they may have a different answer. But then again, maybe it would be the same. All I say is that some of us, I consider myself in this, are ignorant to real pain and so need to be considerate when answering a question based on a subject we are ignorant to.

Thanks a lot Dear.Wonderful Question.
Pain taught a simple but exact law of Nature."You reap, what you sow"
If you inflict pain to others you are bound to get it.Because the world is our own projection. So I started praying very regularly and heartily in the morning -"Let my Mind,Body and speech should not hurt anybody in this Universe."(to repeat Five times)
And when any incident occurs when I inflict pain to others( knowingly or unknowingly) to ask for the Apology within and reaffirm it again.
So it gave me lot of strength to remain painless and cheerful in many so called painful conditions.
Then it lead me to think and find out whether there exist a painless life or not?
Really, Pain is a great teacher!!

Generally speaking....
In life, Life is the mirror image of our deeds (good or bad). If someone has felt the pain, due to because he/she has given pain to someone in their life time. So the lesson it teaches all is "LOVE EVER HURT NEVER" What you give is what you get. If you don't want to see pain in life, don't give pain to anybody. If you can't do good, at least don't deserver to do bad. The "Pain" is such a sweet thing, we we learn from it.
Hope this helps.

Biologically speaking, the reason we have pain at all, is because it is a developed aversion, both real (physical) and imagined (psychological) to things which do us harm and could kill us.
Pain could be viewed as a preventitive measure- to keep you from getting killed or suffering mortal injury, to preserve your life- indicating that dying doesn't necessarily lead to something better, or as you summate with, "in this life".

That no matter how bad it gets, someone is suffering more than me and it makes me shut up and put up with it. It's taught me that I have to make the most of life

pain and pleasure come in a same package. you can not have only one. Buddha has described it-that you sense both through the physical sensation in your body.the whole process of vipassana is based on that. once you know that-it can be transcended.then there may be a physical pain in your body but it will not disturb you...
Enjoy
