i have already created three logical partitions for root, boot and swap as required by linux (red hat 9.0)
But ,all three are in extended partition-would that creat a problem?
Should i create another primary partition?

Which version of RedHat are you trying? It's not an old one, I hope; it's better you use Linux own partitioning tools, and ext2 has been replaced by ext3 (the most used fs along with ReiserFS) which is a journaled fs.
Since you have yet created a partition for Linux (but remember you also need a swap one and a home partition is also very recomended), use Linux Tools to modify that one. It's easy, unless your RedHat is years old.

Well first you are going to need a Boot Loader. Most comonly used out there is GRUB. Research it to find out more.

Also, the reason you are getting that error, is most likley you formated the harddrive in a differnt file system that Linux cannot read. Remember that Linux cannot read the FAT 16, FAT32, NTFS, or EFS that Windows can.

But dual booting is a simple proccess.
