First it has to sound good to catch my attention. Once I find the way the song sounds appealing, I listen to it more closely and catch the lyrics. The way I interpret how the lyrics and the melody blend together determines how much I like the song.

I care more about the things they say. I usually dont look up lyrics straight away so first I go on sounds but when I do get around to looking at the words and I dont agree with them I'll stop listening to the song and sometimes the artist.

Definitely the sound. But then, I'm into classical music, and so often the words are in a language I don't know well, or don't know at all.
When the composer is really good, you don't need to be able to understand the lyrics completely to understand the song. A particularly good example of this is J. S. Bach's "St Matthew Passion." I find it so emotional, that even with only a sketchy knowledge of German, I can't bear to listen.

The lyrics, no doubt. I still listen to the instruments, but the lyrics always get me. There's a song by Willie Nelson that I read the lyrics to first, and absolutely loved. When I heard the actual song I wasn't to crazy about the back ground music, but I still listen to it.

The words are more important. Because words give a bigger impact. Maybe it's because I like to write, but the lyrics are the most important reason why I like the song. ^_^

How the song sounds will catch my attention first, and if I like it I'll listen more closely to what they're saying!

A song without lyrics can categorized as "Soundtrack" that you can still say- it is a song.
But a song without tunes, it's just a poem not song anymore.

The sound will always catch my attention first, if the lyrics are good - then it's a bonus.

for me, i look for the emotion it evokes in me, first the instuments then the tone and melody, after that i consider the voice, and intensity of expressionism,,,, then the lyrics last...
but i listen for emotional expressionism overall....
the more intense the better........
