I think this is an interesting question.

In the crusades of the 12th century, although much has been made of the cruelty of the crusader, the fact remains that for Islam it was a kind of border skirmish. No big deal.

Fast forward about 600 years. The real fight is between modernist Islam and conservative or fundamentalist Islam. The west isn't involved, except indirectly. Many, many Muslims are being killed by other Muslims than by western powers.

It's like the Reformation in the 15th, 16th, and 17th centuries in Europe. It's about who is closer to God. That's how the U.S. got started, supposedly. The Pilgrims left Europe because they were being persecuted for religious beliefs, and as soon as they landed they persecuted people of other Christian faiths, as well as non-Christians.

In 100 years time, if the moderate Muslims win, we will see the west as a minor player in the Muslim reformation.

It takes several decades of hindsight to really begin to know the historical relevance of something. Any headline event could turn into a major field of study 100 years from now.

I think that the war in Iraq could be found in the chapter "The post cold-war years." I think the world is still adjusting from cold war global politics. On the other hand this could be the first section in a book on the rise of something new. "The Rise of the 21st Century Caliphate" or "The Decline of the United States" or it could be mentioned in the introduction of a book covering WW III. If the U.S. decides to stay in this for the long term, whole college courses may be dedicated to it. As far a Saddam goes, I get the feeling he is being overshadowed by the ongoing war, at least in the U.S.

Abosolutely. We live in an instant gratification society. Sometimes we forget that it may take a generation or two before we can really determine the success or failure of a particular event. I don't know what the history books will say, but you can bet that this will play a siginificant role in US history, but more importantly Iraqi history.
