You need to take a course in Make up Artistry 1st to learn about different skin tones skin types how to apply make up properly and skin care then they will put you out to work that is what I did

There are no make-up artist apprenticeships available. The majority of Make-Up Artists are freelance so there isn't that kind of structure in place.

I agree the courses are very expensive and it can be hard to find work once you have finished. It isn't clear if you would prefer to go down the editorial or film/tv side but in both cases you will probably have to work for free for a while either building your portfolio and getting known to different photographers or working on short films / student films and building portfolio/CV and getting contacts.

I would try and get some experience by working on amateur dramatic productions - they are often glad of the assistance and don't mind your lack of experience!

I would also buy a good make up book - maybe one by Kevyn Aucoin to get you started and try out the make up on friends and family. Get used to working with people and trying out the looks. Record your work with a camera so you can see your progressions.

I am suggesting this as a kind of trial before you decide you want to pursue this fully. This is because it is good to decide if it is really for you as there is a lot of hard work and persistance required and you will find yourself short of money for a long time. A kit is very expensive and you will have to support yourself with no income for a while.

There are cheaper courses at local authority colleges eg. West Thames College in South West London and you may find a good course there. There are also one day classes you can take which may be more affordable.

Another good internet resource is www.makeupmag.com which is an American magazine for Make Up Artists and has good info and links and also a forum called www.makeupartistchat.com - their FAQ section has lots of information on starting out in Make Up and also on schools etc.

Hope that helps and good luck!

go to your local college and ask what courses are available you only need to have a basic make up certificate to become a make up artist you can go on to do other courses later. you need BT9 (LEVEL 2) to start with and then a specialist course in theatrical and media make up (LEVEL 3)
