Not all lesbian relationships have role playing, the one being "male" or butch and the other female.T he butch partner usually assumes the male role or the other partner might be bisexual. Two very feminine women could be lesbians but do not role play.

Not all relationships are like that. Some women feel like they need to dominate and they are agressive and such, too much for a man to be straight so they understand themselves to be a butch lesbian. There can be two lipsticks or there can be two butches. Either way, it's all about having fun!

Because that is the only aspect you noticed! How can you tell if two females are in a lesbian relationship or just good friends while out in public? What signal is gay in every culture? Can a butch looking female be straight? You bet.

She is not taking the role of a man, but taking the role of "head of the household". In all realtionships, regardless of equality among the parties, there's one that must assume the role of head of the family, and must be the strong one of the couple.
Lesbians are not always in a "butch-femme" relationship. More often they are "femme-femme", and most people doesn't know that they are lesbian. (Hey, it is nobody's business to know that, anyway, for they have the right to privacy like anyone else). Never consider that the butch acts as if she pretends to be a man, because that is not always the case.

It's not actually true, some lesbians are more 'butch' or tomboyish, others are more feminine and relationships can consist of any combination.
They are often potrayed as one butch and one girly on television though, which is probably why you think that.

Sometimes but not always...my two best friends are lesbians and neither of them are butch...I'm a gay man and neither me nor my partner is camp...I guess for those who are butch or camp it's a mixture of genetics, biology, learned behaviour and sometimes just deliberate camping or butching it up. Some do that as they want people to identify them as gay. It does seem ironic though, when a women who likes women ends up looking like a man sometimes!

in any couple there is usually one more feminine than the other, male/female, male/male, female/female. i know more straight 'butches' than gay ones.
surely gender orientation doesn't have to be the same as sexual orientation?
sure, lots of women and men identify with what is percieved as powerful stereotypes, but all do not, and i would try personally not to be put into any category, as would a lot of my friends.
it is easier, having said that, to be 'obviously' a butch lez if you are on the pull, as other women will not be as worried about rejection from a straight woman.

Butch women and camp men are more noticeable therefore it becomes a stereotype. For every camp/butch person there are a million others who are 'average/normal' (sorry, not sure what word to use!) who you wouldn't be able to tell the sexuality of anyway.

I bet you see two femme lesbians often and just think they're best friends. Butch femme relationships are just easy to point out.
