I have had two Acer laptops over the past few years (Travelmate & Aspire models). The Travelmate was fine if a bit lacking in the process power stakes. The Aspire had a great spec and well up to professional and gaming use. However both laptops quickly developed cracks at the hinges which Acer support assessed and stated both were due to misuse (£100 charge each to fix). This is rubbish as after spending over £1300 on both I am hardly likely to misuse them. The Aspire was less than a year old at this point. They also lost the Aspire in their warehouse and I did not get it back for a month! The Aspire has since developed power issues which I have been quoted £200 for repair. Stay away from Acer! Poor company and poor product. I am looking elsewhere for a replacement.

depends
you are going to get shafted on faults or repiars whatever make you choose. its a matter of how much, sony will undoubtably be mor expensive

so you have a choice is it a long term purchase (most laptops are goosed after 2..3 years (either they are so technically outdated, or just slow) its probably easier just to ditch 'em. Id check to see if you actually need a laptop. I think there are a few requirements for a laptop (ie you are on the road), but more often than note its an excuse, people see it as a badge of office. In some cases its movement of data (that can be easily & cheaply done using a USB memory stick)

so if yoiu are in the market for a laptop I wouldn't disagree with any of the suggestions so far.Dell, HP, Toshiba are worth a look, as indeed are other premium brands (I wouldnt rule out Panasonic)

if its a cost saving you want consider MSI, or whoever. Many of the less recognised brands are actually the same machine rebadged. It may be cheaper / moire cost effective to buy a high spec laptop and when it dies get another rather than repiar it. sad but true

If I wsa inthe market for a laptop right now Id probably by a MSI, or even one of the Korean ones. but I dont need a laptop, my old desktop does the work for me and is easy AND cheap to repair & upgrade (unlike laptops).

I use an Acer Aspire and would recommend this brand any time. The Sony Vaio looks good, but when I was making my purchase, the Acer had much better specs for less money. I have had mine for about 9 months now and never had a problem. Go for the Acer

I own a Sony Vaio and have done for almost 2 years now I would not change it for any other brand except maybe a Dell. I love the screen which is Jet Black and awesome for Movies or video files. The Battery lasts longer than the lower brands stuff (I owned a Toshiba before).

The updates are sometimes patchy with Sony which if anything is the only critisicm that I have of the machine.

I hope this helps and enjoy.

Between the 2, Sony is probably better. However, I would look around. These are not the best laptops around. Out of all the laptops, I would rate Dell and then Toshiba. Don't get caught up about discussions about memory, processor speed and all that - if you choose the correct RAM + processor speed and software, the hardware is (almost) irrelevant. What you need to look at is clever design and functionality. You will pay more for the same spec Dell, but their design is Very smart - keyboard, functionality and portability (thickness mostly). I have recently had to replace my work Dell Latitude and opted for a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo. It is not half bad, but still rate the Dell better on some of the clever design features listed above.

I've had Toshibas and Sonys and thought both were great. I'm now on my second Toshiba and it's doing pretty well so far. One thing I noticed is that the RAM tends to be low on high spec Sonys, which slows things down a bit. My current Toshiba cost approx £400 less than my previous Sony but the spec was the same with more RAM.

Good luck. Never had an Acer, but they've always struck me as low-end/starter laptops. Depends what you want to use it for really.

My brother bought an Acer laptop which gave him no end of trouble. It was a hi-spec one and the machine kept overheating because the fan was not powerful enough to keep it cool. How bad is that for design!! Then the screen stopped working and then he had no assistance from Acer to get help with getting it fixed - the warranty was worthless. They are probably good machines but expect to buy another one in 12-18months time.

Sony are known as good machines but I don't have any personal experience of them.

It really depends on how you intend to use your laptop but I've just bought a MacBook Pro and everyone knows that Mac machines are designed to be flogged hard! And they survive. I haven't really heard many complaints from Mac computer owners.

Sony Vaio..I know of 2 Clients that have had these New machines FAIL on them when least expected!
Acer? A Bit low Spec and Unreliable!!

Have you looked at COMPAQ?
Or maybe even Macbook or MacBook Pro By Apple!??(Very Sweet and a Great Work Horse!)

yeah, Sony is alright, and Acer is good for a beginning computer, unless you really want to spedn money on a more expensive Acer....i would check out a Mac, although they are expensive, because they are your best bet, and anyone who says anything negative about them realize that they are the top of the line and that things said about the Mac are true, but they won't admit it....look into Hewlitt Packard though if you do not wish to spend the money on a Mac, or look into that Sony...as for Dells, if you want heartbreak and screaming and cursing, then get a Dell...if you want reliability, then go with the Sony, or possibly the Acer, they are both fine computer companies

The Acer Aspire 5101AWLMi.

DO NOT go for the Sony Vaio, i've had an awful lot of trouble with mine over the three years i have had it. I had to call them five or six times just to get the CD Drive mended. Their aftersales is really bad. And out of warranty parts are really expensive (280€ for a CD drive) and I had to send it to Belgium.

I've got an Acer Desktop. Its really good!!! But if you want my honest opinion, in laptops, go for a Toshiba, they are alot better! (I use one at work)
