Look closely at your TV. It should have Yp, Yb and R plugs colored blue, green and red. These three colored plugs will also be on the cable (called Component plugs)
Furthermore there are a white and a red plug on the cable. Do not confuse this red (audio) plug with the red video plug of the YpYbR part.

The yellow Plug is not used for the 480p. It's for composite video.

Connect the Component plugs onto your HDTV and the audio plugs with your stereo (or TV as well).

That should do the trick. If your TV doesn't have the component plugs, then it's not a HD TV.

Set the screen size to 4:9 in the screen settings menu on the TV. The Wii looks great.
